4.27.26 do you feel like talking about... april? | SlipsWorld

Here we are at the end of yet another light month largely dominated by a ton of time spent with a videos game. Let's review April!

Blackout - Britney Spears

I've been interested in checking out the discographies of 2000s-era pop stars to see how they ended up influencing the music of today and I'm a little underwhelmed by how dated this sounds. Maybe I'm spoiled by a lot of modern pop sounding more polished and crystal-clear, but the production on this feels kind of muddy and overcompressed in a way that keeps a lot of tracks from being as danceable as I would've liked them to be. Some hooks manage to pop out at me more that others though, leading to a few decent dance-pop tracks. I'm honestly surprised she didn't work more with Pharrell!

Fav Tracks: Heaven on Earth, Freakshow, Hot as Ice, Why Should I Be Sad

VOLUMES: ONE (SELECTIONS FROM MUSIC CONCERTS 2019-2023 BON IVER 6 PIECE BAND) - Bon Iver

While I likely might prefer the studio versions of some of these tracks, I do appreciate how this live album makes many of these great songs sound larger than life in many respects. Between this and the lack of a tour for SABLE, fABLE, I'm wondering if they might be retiring live tours which would be a massive shame for me as someone who would love to see them live. In any case, I'm especially interested in seeing more live-only tracks be released as they continue putting out these archival recordings.

Fav Tracks: Jelmore, Heavenly Father, Hey, Ma, Sh'Diah

wow

EUSEXUA Afterglow - FKA twigs

The original EUSEXUA was a lot more stylistically minimal than I expected and while Afterglow has more layered textures and a couple of energetic tracks, the overall vibe is a lot more psychedelic and delirious as if you are inebriated during a club night out. I ultimately prefer the original record because it's a lot more consistent between both of its tracklists, but this follow-up acts as an interesting alternative to it with a strange euphoric identity all its own.

Fav Tracks: Wild and Alone, HARD, Cheap Hotel, Sushi

WHAT WE DREW - Yaeji

This was a largely pretty decent soundtrack to cleaning my room, strongly appealing to my affinity for twinkling minimal synth beats and atmospheric chill vibes. While I wasn't a fan of the roughness of a few tracks on here, its highlights can be pretty solid for their vibrant textures and laidback vibes despite me being fairly new to Korean pop music.

Fav Tracks: WHEN I GROW UP, WHAT WE DREW, SPELL, WAKING UP DOWN, THE TH1NG

Poltergeist

As I'm getting more into horror, I'm starting to realize that I greatly prefer films that are a lot more subdued in their tone to elicit feelings of eeriness than ones that are constantly over-the-top in their emotionality. I still enjoyed this movie a lot for its imaginative depictions of demons and lost souls, though I feel like its scare factor loses a bit of steam in its final sequence. I'd imagine that even with its grislier moments, this film would have been a great choice in introducing me to horror if I was younger due to the Spielbergian flair of it all.

wow

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

This film's centering on the redemption of a character who is presented as unlikable for a large portion of its runtime makes it not as fun of a watch as Grand Budapest, but its aquatic setting and dynamic characters are what ended up making for a pretty fun time nonetheless. I was especially impressed by the growing relationship between Steve and Ned as the former becomes more open to accepting responsibilities and rediscovering why he became an explorer in the first place. Pretty sweet arc!

wow

Blade Runner

As someone who has seen 2049 before seeing the original, I can say that I'm kind of surprised that the depiction of human-replicant romance in this falls incredibly flat considering how it was such a big part of its sequel (at least from what I remember of it from seeing it in theaters all those years ago). The sets, miniatures and score are all very gorgeous and I was especially endeared by the character of J. F. Sebastian, whose toy companions were delightful and who I am disappointed to find out has died offscreen. :(

wow

The Shining

There are a lot of different intersecting themes at play in this film and so much is left up to the viewer to fill in a lot of the unexplained blanks, so I'll offer up some conclusions I have made after my first viewing. I feel like Jack's murderous impulses are less so a result of mental illness brought on by isolation and more so a result of a perceived psychological need to gain power as influenced by the essence of the Overlook Hotel and its history of racism and placement over a Native American burial ground. My thoughts on the film are still bubbling as I write this, but overall I'm amazed by the multitudes it contains.

wow

Gris

I was expecting this game to be a pretty short experience yet I was still surprised that I reached the end of it as soon as I did. Knowing about how Gris is essentially a depiction of the five stages of grief, I found it interesting how progressively hopeful the game's world becomes as your character encounters little creatures that help them with the puzzles. Between that and the more intense boss sequences, I was a little bummed to see it end so soon which is a testament to how invested I was in the game's atmosphere, even if it fizzles out a bit at the end.

wow

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream

This game has been dominating my spare time since it came out and even though I've already experienced most of what it has to offer, I'm still hooked on making Miis and custom items for it. The customization really adds a lot to the replay value and the fact that it's more engaging to witness the Miis roaming around your island makes this game miles more interesting that the 3DS original. Here are some of the Miis I've created for SlipsWorld Island: https://tomodachishare.com/profile/1547

Well, that's all for this month! I still haven't finished Primal season 3, but I expect myself to get around to finishing it this month. See you later!
