10.27.25 a man of constant loggin'

Good news everyone! As of writing this, I'm basically done with the main text portion of my Deltarune analysis! All I need to do now is to incorporate it all on full pages with images, fonts, music (?) and wacky Easter eggs. It's been a long time coming, but hopefully all this work will create something worthwhile and thoughtful in the end. Now let's get to loggin'!

Plucking a Cherry from the Void - Cecile Believe

I really vibe with the tactile production style this album goes for, being satisfying to the ears in a way that a lot of SOPHIE's work was, which is fitting since Believe collaborated a lot with her. That amazing vocal range that I recognize from several SOPHIE tracks is also here in full force, though this record mostly goes for a more ambient direction where some of the more unreal and abrasive sounds that it goes for vary in terms of how they fit in the overall mix from track to track. Still a very consistent record though! Would recommend for fans of SOPHIE's work.

Fav Tracks: Stay Open, Drop, Living My Life Over (Extreme Vocal Edit), Silver Line, Bitch Bites Dog

Emotion: Side B - Carly Rae Jepsen

While this short collection of tracks doesn't hold a candle to the pop perfection demonstrated on the original Emotion, I still find this release to be a very consistent effort. I can definitely picture an alternate universe where one or two of these songs can easily replace one of the weaker tracks from the original album and it would still be pretty great.

Fav Tracks: First Time, The One, Body Language, Store

MAGDALENE - FKA twigs

I might need a few more listens of this to dissect the lyrics a little more, but for the most part, I like the very emotive theatrical tone that this record embodies. I think I like the more atmospheric tracks on the latter half of the album a little more, though I appreciate how twigs' voice fits in a variety of soundscapes from trap beats to piano ballads.

Fav Tracks: sad day, mary magdalene, daybed, cellophane

Heaven Camera - Ivy Hollivana

Continuing this trend of electronic records with beautiful vocals is this very mystical recent release from a smaller artist. While I enjoy the very regal aesthetics paired with high energy beats, I find that the mixing on here doesn't sit right with me occasionally and a few switchups on some tracks are a little jarring to me, though generally, I do like the mystical energy present here enough to warrant my favs being on repeat. Looking forward to more from Ivy!

Fav Tracks: Bravery, in the Computer, Manifesting, Wastewater Doll, On the Line

Angel - Himera

I've been sleeping on this early EP from one of my favorite underground producers mainly because I was more interested in their later work and while I might not be coming back to this one in full any time soon, there's still an undeniable energy to Himera doing straight-up trance music that makes it interesting enough to look at as a testament to their evolution as an artist.

Brazil

Pessimistic satire isn't usually my thing, but I still enjoyed this mainly because of how it presents its protagonist as a very nuanced individual. At first, I felt motivated to root for Sam Lowry because of their greater ambitions to defy the rigid yet unfair totalitarian government that rules over him and puts others at risk of wrongful death, though later on, I started to question his motivations as he tries to become the hero that he sees himself as in his dreams at the expense of his own safety. Through the whole movie, he was so confident about what path he wanted to take in life that he didn't stop to question who he was really in it for, continuing the film's recurring motif of human error never being accounted for in a society that values 'perfection.'

wow

This is Spinal Tap

This could be because of the hype I've heard about this film for years, but I came away from this kind of underwhelmed. I liked a lot of the jokes, especially the sex farm song, but I feel like I would've enjoyed this better knowing that it was more of a hangout movie than something you could pop on and expect a chuckle a minute from like I was led to believe initially. Still a decently fun watch though!

wow

The Producers

I was only ever familiar with the musical adaptation of this, so I was pleasantly surprised when I saw Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder playing the leads. They do an amazing job here with their flawless chemistry as a desperate theater owner and a neurotic accountant, making even some of the slower scenes in this exaggerated comic gem entertaining to watch. Not much else to say about this one, just another classic film!

wow

O Brother, Where Art Thou?

I enjoy how a lot of the Coen brothers' filmography experiments with an anthology structure and such an approach really suits the dynamic between this film's main three escaped convicts quite nicely. The fact that the story is an adaptation of ancient Greek literature also helps to make each section of the film work as their own self-contained fables that all connect together into a grander tapestry at the end. Very charming and inventive, makes me excited to see more from the Coens!

Tekkonkinkreet

How come every film I end up falling in love with has some sort of central theme of duality at its center? This film in particular is centered around the balance of youthful innocence and hardened vigilance as represented by the bond between the film's two young orphan protagonists, Black and White. As dynamic and action-packed the film is with its seamless blend of painted and 3D environments, it's very reflective in its depiction of street life and how gentrification affects both the citizens of Treasure Town and the wealthier yakuza that the orphans are at odds with. The narrative especially takes a psychological turn towards the end with some of the most gripping and dynamic visuals I've seen in an animated film illustrating Black's psyche after being separated from White. It's an amazing film that I'm surprised not that many people have seen! It deserves my recommendation!

GoodFellas

Stories about the mob have always been a blind spot for me, though from what little I have seen of The Sopranos, I have found myself vibing more with the emotional arcs on display than the specific details of mob politics they establish. While I enjoy how this film switches perspectives frequently to illustrate how the mob keeps itself afloat through pure passivity, it eventually gets to a point where it moves by kind of fast, leaving me with less time to process the emotional stakes of the narrative. I might need to watch this one again sometime, namely after I get into The Sopranos for real, so I can have a broader perspective to appreciate it a little more.

Turns out this 'spooky' log was more of a funny log this month, but who knows? Maybe I'll watch some scary stuff next month. Until then, I'll be gettin' my Kris post done soon, so stay tuned!
